The hiring of Dave Humpton and Bill Blum Now the Story Can Be Told
Congratulations are in order!
Thanks!
To Bob Hydorn in his second meeting as MVF board president calling for board approval of the appointment of the ad hoc Personnel Selection Committee after 288 days or 9 ½ of inaction after Zakian and Barber’s resignations. 9 ½ months is more than enough time to make a baby and fill a key position. But in both situations, someone has to start the process. Although it wasn’t pretty Bob Hydorn’s courageous leadership got the process started.
To Katherine Gray, Jim King and Scott Johnson elected to board in March of 2007 for delivering on their promise to “restoring confidence in
No Thanks!
While we celebrate the favorable results now, during its 6 months of intense deliberation, the committee experienced a continuing series of disappointments and set backs. The silent consensus among its members was that a favorable result was very much in doubt.
The Search Begins
At the initial organization meeting of the search committee Pat Huson provided the Executive Vice President’s position descriptions and a status update.
The recently elected members of the board and the home owner representatives on the search committee silently wondered why after almost 10 months there appeared to be little evidence of preliminary staff work, preparation, planning and off course progress made on these 2 important positions.
It was assumed the Foundation would have in place an automatic standard employment process for identifying, attracting, screening, qualifying and evaluating each job classification group when a vacancy occurred. This would be especially true for supervisory and management level staff openings.
Pat assured the committee that indeed was the case. There were already many experienced and qualified applicants for the Director of Administration and Finance position. Lois Campbell was keeping Treasurer Katherine Gray apprised. The Executive Vice President opening had for sometime been made know through trade and executive personnel placement contacts and sources.
Through the spring and summer the committee met frequently to review and discuss applicants and conduct group telephone interviews with candidates. In August the committee presented for board consideration 3 candidates.
Headlines in The Gazette’s September 19th edition trumpeted the board’s responses “MVF lingers without leader – One board member’s refused to vote leaves hired in 4-4 tie”. The ensuring articles printed Pat Huson’s assessment of the situation “As far as I know they’re still deadlocked. I honestly do not see at this point how it will be resolved. But I’m sure that it will be”.
As the Village enjoyed the Labor Day holiday weekend there the silence on the Director of Finance and Administration opening signaled more disappointment.
What was going on?
As in so many events that don’t happen in the Village the Foundation had once again put into play its policy mandated practice of passive personnel, program and problem solving management style in filling these 2 key positions. That’s right nothing had been done or accomplished.
The application files for the DF&A position lay dormant in Lois Campbell‘s possession including Bill Blum’s impressive resume, his frequent follow up faxes and telephone inquiries.
Other than advertising the position in The Village News there was little evidence that either job was advertised and posted on line in any local, metropolitan, national, trade or employment newspapers or publications. Shortly after the ad hoc search committee membership was determined the EVP opening was posted on the Community Associations Institute “CAI Job Market” internet job bank. This produced the 15 applicants the committee considered and the 3 candidates submitted to the board consideration.
A carefully targeted and managed executive job search for comparable positions, utilizing advertising in the employment sections of metropolitan, national, business, HR and trade journal newspapers and publications and corresponding web postings would normally produce several hundred responses.
How did we avoid the train wreck?
We got lucky, 3 times. First, board member and Treasurer at the time, Katherine Grey had reviewed the initial DF&A applications and resumes received and was particular impressed with the Bill Blum’s experience, background and credentials. Not satisfied with the answers and delays to her frequent inquires and requests, Katherine contacted Bill directly, set up meetings and interviews that lead to his hiring.
The second lucky event was the board dead-locked vote. First it prevented the hiring of yet another MVF EVP selection mismatch. In all probability the rendition of the Village’s pathetic plight as described in The Gazette’s September 19th edition must have inspired Dave Humpton to say “I think I can help these guys”.
The third component of the perfect storm of luck was Dave’s availability and interest at the Village’s most desperate hour of need.
Under Hydorn's leadership, Gray, King, and Johnson's support, it shows they are just such a small group. They have done a great job. With that said I will repeat what I said 2 weeks ago on this blog.

You should add "NO THANKS" to the likes of the Homes Corporation's tribal leaders by name.
ReplyDeleteBrandt President of Patton Ridge, Gronsky President of Stedwick, Incencio President of Normandie I, O'Grady President of East Village, Perley Presidnet of Whetstone, and their puppet Aiuto board member of Patton Ridge. Aiuto for some unknown reason is also chair of an MVF committee.
Brief and excellent analysis. "Tribal leaders" is a perfect way to describe Surly Perley, the Pontificating Pygmy President of Patton Ridge and the other dimwits who think they are something special. They have brought shame upon our house with their chest pounding idiocy.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the hiring of Mr. Humpton and Mr. Blum were masterstrokes, only possible through the new MV leadership.
The question is who dares run for the MVF in the coming election.
ReplyDeleteI still think it will be nasty if any of the so called "Tribal Leaders" run anyone. That gang of thugs is no more thinking of Montgomery Village, all they think about is their own lack of power since they have none.
yes, the new leaders -- Hydrorn, King, Gray and Johnson -- have used good sense and done a lot of just plain old fasihoned hard work. As for the rest of the board, they need to go. Montgomery Village deserves better leaders.
ReplyDeleteIf any of the incumbents dare to run, they will have to deal with the truth because they brought in Zakian, Campbell and the rest of that ragtag group. They ran through our money. They didn't do what they were supposed to do which namely was to run things right and protect our money. They are crazy if they are even thinking of running again. I don't know anyone who will vote for them.
One of my neighbors just told me that the former MVF board member from South Village is planning to run for that board again. Has she lost her mind? People around here don't like her so why would she run if her own neighbors won't vote for her. There has to be sharper people than this willing to run.
ReplyDeleteIf the person you are referring to is Musante, don't forget she hired Zakian. She is horrible. She has hurt her own community.
ReplyDeleteMake it simple here, we as owners in Montgomery Village need to demand a real forensic audit of the books. Humpton may be good, Blum may know what he is doing, but others did the deed not these guys. The people wanting a seat on the board had better agree to this audit.
ReplyDeleteFor most of you posting comments here, apathy is the main name of the game.
ReplyDeleteYou will post comments here but not run for your Boards or even the MVF board.
CHANGE requires people doing things, not just sitting behind a computer. If you truly want change, "to get the old Board out", to get certain Presidents of HOA's out, then either run, or vote what you want. Simple as that.
How many of you have even attended a meeting of your HOA or MVF?
Blogging is fine but ACTION is important. You don't like who is running for MVF, RUN YOURSELF. You don't like who is in PATTON RIDGE, RUN YOURSELF.
What are you afraid of?
Word on the street is don't count on Bill Blum.
ReplyDeleteDoesnt know what he is doing.
Expect a firing by Humpton or by Campbell.
Sounds like Lois Campbell gossip to me. She is unwanted and unliked. Probably can't stand having someone doing the books who is not using smoke and mirrors.
ReplyDeleteAs I said back on October 28, 2007
ReplyDelete"You've forgotten that all of us who live in the Village pay into the MVF Fund, whether or not our communities are managed or maintained by the MVF. What we're concerned about is the gross mismanagement of MVF finances, the continued deficits, the embezzlements and the lack of professionalism in the running of the organization. Taking potshots at people who are trying to resolve these problems isn't productive."
"Word" must not know that Humpton stood up and Campbell is gone. Staff is finally glad to come to work. When I was on staff Campbell ran the place not Huson. Huson was as scared of her as the rest of us.
ReplyDelete"When I was on staff........"
ReplyDeleteWell you aren't there anymore right?
Looks like the disinformation campaign begins. Some of the "old guard" just can't wait to undermine the new guys who are working hard to restore the MVF's finances and tattered reputation --and doing a great job of it, I might add. Homeowners I talk to are delighted by the change in tone and the professionalism now evident at MVF. To the new guys I say, "Keep up the good work!"

ReplyDeleteDear Observer - Thank you for your accurate interpretation of the terrible mess MVF calls financial statements. Somewhere there has to be some accountability for these misleading "reports" and comments made by the staff. If the Treasurer presents the reports, then he should be held accountable for any material inaccuracies he signs off on. The MVF financial reporting is probably the most misleading and moronic presentations I've ever seen.
Again, Observer, thank you for your clearly stated REAL financials.
One day the residents of the Village will wake up and do something but I think most don't even want to know.

Word from inside is that dinosaurs are going to try to rule the earth again. Some of the nasty old guard will try to run for the MVF board.
ReplyDeleteThe rumor is Perley, Musante and Negro, three awful people, will submit applications. I hope residents will send them back to the Stone Age where they belong.
Perley, Musante and Negro supported the 50% assessment increase! They supported Zakian. THEY are the problem.
ReplyDeletePerley and Negro are both running. No word on Musante.
ReplyDeleteTo Sane Again:
ReplyDeleteWhy do you say three awful people for running for the MVF?
11 people are now running for MVF. This will have to be approved by the Nom. Committee of course.
It will be a hot and contested raced with many on a "slate" for their own good.
Well, maybe there are more than 3 awful people running! The first 3 are Musante, Perley and Negro. They are dinosaurs.
ReplyDeleteFirley (SV) is on the ballot, he is a loose cannon and cannot add 2 sentences together to save his life.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen any list of people running yet. Has it been announced who is running for the MVF? Or is it just the insiders at the MVF gossiping again.
ReplyDelete"Cannot add 2 sentences together?" An interesting feat of mathematics at least. Perhaps it says more about the author than the intended target (smile).
ReplyDeleteThe rumours are true - I will run for a seat on the board.
For what its worth, please remember that we all live here, we are all neighbors.
I may disagree with some of the other folks running, and some of those differences will be profound. But I'd ask anybody who would support my candidacy to refrain from name calling and divisive language. If you volunteer to serve, I'm willing to stipulate that you do so for honorable reasons. Let's begin with that premise for all who put themselves forth for consideration. We may disagree about many things, but I prefer to assume that we all want the best for our community.
[OK, that was more than two sentences, but I feel they "add up."]
Mr. Firley, I recalled seeing something you wrote in the Village News back in November. I'm tired of the hostility directed toward residents who want to help our community. Most of all, I want to be proud to live in Montgomery Village. Here's your letter which rings true for me, especially the last paragraph:
ReplyDelete"Editor:
I write regarding the recent meeting to raise the assessment ceiling at the MVF.
As a twenty-plus year resident, and as an officer in one of the homes corporations, I am appalled at the level of discussion. I realize that the last years have been difficult for many in our community. We live in an era where costs are continuously rising and when our personal incomes have often failed to keep pace with demands upon our private purse.
That alone would lead one to expect our residents to demand greater accountability and efficiency from the operation of the Foundation. In light of recent MVF history, that this demand should be amplified should come as no surprise to any thinking person.
What troubles me is that there are fellow citizens who apparently find this simple expectation of accountability and transparency offensive.
They have taken to hurling abuse at those who dare to question the accelerating demand for money. Not to deny funding in any unthinking way, just to examine justification for increased assessments and to place restraints on escalating costs.
Contrary to the rhetoric, the assessment ceiling vote did not threaten operations in any way, and fully funded 2008 operations. What the members said, in effect, was "We will keep the dog on a short leash until its behavior is consistently more to our liking." That is simple good stewardship.
What is most distressing is that the abusive comments have come from some who style themselves leaders of the community. Several persons were victims of abusive comments by fellow officers during the public proceedings.
I believe we need civility as much as strategy and patience more than pugilism. I call upon my fellow citizens and especially my fellow officers to cease their hostility to our neighbors.
Mark J. Firley
President, South Village Homes Corporation."
Steve Greenspan is running from Whetstone. His background is shady, and he is as crooked as the day is long. Do NOT vote for him. Save Whetstone.
ReplyDeleteHotly contested race but do not vote for PERLEY MUSANATE GREENSPAN BORT.
ReplyDeleteSave Britney please.
ReplyDeletewww.tmz.com
Hotly contested race for sure but do not vote for PERLEY MUSANATE GREENSPAN or NEGRO.
ReplyDeleteGet it right folks.
Greenspan is running for MVF? You gotta be kidding! Here are some reasons NOT to vote for him:
ReplyDeleteHe has served for many years on the MVF Audit Committee. How many years has MVF had deficit budgets? At least three years! He uncritically supported raising assessments, joined in plundering the undesignated reserves until there was nothing left, then turned around and helped raid the designated reserves to cover day to day expenses, an accounting no-no. If you're feeling a bit light in the wallet, you can thank Greenspan.
In Whetstone, Greenspan has refused to support the 3 bid policy for letting contracts, spent thousands of dollars in legal fees beating up on residents -- including a member of the armed forces while he was serving in Afghanistan, and generally abusing and belittling residents and board members alike. Finally, in late 2006, he threatened a fellow board member at a board meeting and had to resign. You can read all about it in the January 2007 Gazette online at www.gazette.net.
If the MVF is going to get better, it needs board members who care about the community, not self-important windbags like Greenspan.
Reading the Gazette last night and see that Steve Greenspan and Linc Perley from Whetstone are trying to get on the MV board. Why would anyone vote for them, they are old timers with old ideas. Greenspan even had to resign from our Whetstone BD after he got in an argument with Bob Watson another BD member.
ReplyDeleteIs there one blogger on this website that is not ignorant and vicious??
ReplyDeleteThere are people on this blog who have spent a lot of time thinking about how to get the Village back on track. Vicious? Some have engaged in mild and occasionally humorous name-calling but that's to be expected on a blog so don't be so thin-skinned. Ignorant? Hardly. It's difficult and time-consuming to read the MVF financials and when you get to the bottom line, it's not a pretty picture. So, these people aren't ignorant. Not unless you think that an MVF budget that has been in a deficit for 3 years is a good thing. And why, may I ask, would you think that? C'mon, join in the discussion. Let's have some facts here.
ReplyDeleteThe problem is that you do nothing but think about how to get the "Village" back on track, who are you all and what are you doing positive for the community!
ReplyDeleteIt is stunning that the very people who created the financial problems and who brought us John Zakian and let him run loose, now think they are fit to be on the MVF board. SAY NO to: Donegan, Frohman, Greenspan Musante, Negro and Perley. They are the problem! No more deficits, rudeness, 50% assessment increase attempts, boathouse, lies and mismanagement. You people should be embarrassed to show your faces.
ReplyDeleteArt
ReplyDeleteDo your clients know how vicious you are?? Perhaps they should!
Tonight's the candidates forum for the MVF board. It's at 7 p.m. at the Whetstone Community Center.
ReplyDeleteWonder how many will show up?
Art, why don't you run?
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about BLUM. He's been CANNED. We knew about this last week.
ReplyDeleteSo much for your title of "The Hiring of a New EVP & DFS Good Job! We were lucky!"
We weren't.
